History of The Valley
Dehradun was founded in the early 18th century by Guru Ram Rai the elder son of 7th Sikh guru, Guru Hari Rai. He came here in 1675 and settled in Dhamawala village where the annual Jhanda fare is still held in his memory in the fifth day after Holi. Dehradun was an independent kingdom and later a part of Nepal. Nepal lost Dehradun to England when India was colonized by the Britishers and was now called Dehra while the district was known as Dehradun. Dehradun municipality was established in 1867 and in 1900 railways made its way to Dehradun via Haridwar. In 1901 Dehradun was the district of British India in the Meerut division which laid in the hill station of Mussoorie. During the second world war, the Dehradun central internment camp was the major prison camp to detain German, Australian, and Italian who were living in or visiting British colonies in Asia before the war. Post Independence the other parts of Garhwal and Kumaon were merged with the united provinces which were later named as the state of Uttar Pradesh. On November 9, 2000, the state of Uttarakhand was created from northwestern districts of Uttar Pradesh. Then Dehradun was made its provisional capital. Since then the city has maintained continuous development.

Jolly Grant Airport
